New Student Checklist
Welcome to the University of Illinois Chicago. As a new student, ensuring success involves taking the right steps to access and utilize the essential tech resources available to you.
This checklist is designed to help you navigate the tools and services that will support your studies, connect you with valuable resources, and set you up for success from day one. Let's get started on making the most of your educational experience by ensuring you're fully equipped with the technology and support you need.
Set up your UIC Accounts

1. Activate your UIC NetID.
- Your NetID and password are used to protect access to university services and applications and can be activated at the NetID Center.
2. Enroll in Duo 2FA.
- Secure your UIC accounts by enabling Duo two-factor Authentication (2FA) — download the Duo Mobile app and activate 2FA for extra protection.
3. Set up password recall and alerts.
- You can change and update your password, sign up for UIC alerts, and more at the NetID Center.
4. Access UIC email.
- Log in to your UIC email using your NetID and password.
- Duo 2FA is required.
Recognize Email Scams (Fake Job Offers, Password Reset, "Phishing")

You may be looking forward to the semester but cybercriminals can quickly turn your academic year upside down. Be aware of common cyber scams and protect yourself from malicious attempts.
Fake Job Offers
- Stay vigilant against fake job offers and online scams that target UIC students.
- The scams make enticing job offers and then request sensitive information or request funds.
Password Reset
- Fake Emails claim you requested a password change or fake warned that your account will be/has been deactivated.
- Emails contain links to fake sites prompting you to enter your login and passwords so they can steal them.
Know how to recognize scams
- Learn how to spot warning signs, protect your personal information, and report dangerous scams.
Designate Your Preferred First Name & Pronouns

Students may designate a preferred first name (PFN) in university systems and applications. For example, if a student’s name is “Robert” but prefers to be known as “Bobby”, the student can update their preferred name, which systems will then use or display.
Some university systems also support defining personal pronouns

Print Services
- Wepa is UIC’s print solution enabling students to print resources.

Equipment Lending
- Technology Solutions provides short-term loans of various equipment to support the academic needs of students and faculty. Information about checkouts and reservations can be found at the UIC Help Center site.
UIC-WiFi
- Get connected to the UIC’s campus Wi-Fi.

- Discover how to make the most of UIC’s campus resources. myUIC to access and stay connected with important university tools.
Download and Access Software

Office365
- UIC offers free access to essential software like Office 365, as well as additional tools available through the WebStore.
LinkedIn Learning
- Enhance your skills with free access to LinkedIn Learning courses and make the most of your time at UIC.
WebStore
- Download and purchase discounted software available through the WebStore.
