In recognition of Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) on May 15th, the University of Illinois Chicago is highlighting its growing commitment to digital inclusion for all members of the UIC community.

Digital accessibility ensures that websites, online learning materials, and campus technologies are usable by people with disabilities. At UIC, accessibility is more than a compliance obligation—it’s a key part of the university’s mission to support equity, innovation, and student success.

In alignment with recent updates to ADA Title II, UIC has launched a wide-reaching initiative to improve accessibility across its digital ecosystem. The efforts are coordinated by the Digital Accessibility Steering Committee (DASC) and reflect a collaborative, campus-wide approach.

Digital Accessibility Resource Hub Launched

UIC has created a central location for accessibility-related tools, support, and training at accessibility.uic.edu. Additional resources will be added over time.

Faculty and Staff Training

More than 725 faculty and staff members have participated in digital accessibility training sessions to enhance their understanding and practices.

Website and Course Material Improvements

Accessibility enhancements are actively underway across over 700 UIC websites and thousands of course materials to ensure they meet updated accessibility standards.

Campus Support and Consultation Services

Over 24 colleges and units have received direct consultation services regarding ADA Title II. Many individuals have also engaged with DASC during dedicated accessibility office hours.

Integration with Campus-Wide Initiatives

Accessibility improvements are being integrated with UIC’s Learning Management System (LMS) transition and the uic.edu website redesign, helping ensure long-term impact.

While UIC has made strong progress, ongoing work includes developing a consolidated accessibility dashboard and remediating existing digital content. Future investments planned for FY25 aim to further strengthen these efforts and help position UIC as a leader in digital accessibility across higher education.

Members of the UIC community are encouraged to visit accessibility.uic.edu to learn more, request support, or get involved.
