UIC Modernizing IP Address Management Infrastructure with EfficientIP
Upgrading UIC’s DNS & DHCP Infrastructure
UIC Technology Solutions is taking a key step in modernizing UIC’s IP Address Management (IPAM) infrastructure that will improve the stability, security, and reliability of our Domain Name System (DNS) and Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). DNS and DHCP are integral parts of website infrastructure and management, and ensure websites can be found and accessed on the internet.
Our current DNS and DHCP infrastructure is outdated and supported by legacy servers and applications, which rely on a collection of custom, outdated scripts. Rather than updating legacy systems and scripts, Technology Solutions has decided to partner with EfficientIP, a network security and automation company, specializing in DNS-DHCP-IPAM (DDI). By partnering with EfficientIP, Technology Solutions will improve the stability, security, and reliability of our IPAM Infrastructure.
What is DNS and DHCP? Heading link
The Domain Name System (DNS) is the hierarchical and decentralized naming system used to identify computers, services, and other resources reachable through the Internet or other Internet Protocol networks.
Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a client/server protocol that automatically provides an Internet Protocol (IP) host with its IP address and other related configuration information such as the subnet mask and default gateway.

This replacement will support new features, such as IPv6, improved zone delegation, and improved address assignment, as well as support API-based access and updates. Finally, the new appliances will also support enhanced reporting and security with the NetChange module, replacing NetPeek.

When is this happening? Heading link
Beginning October 3rd, Technology Solutions will begin the transfer of UIC’s IP Address Management infrastructure to EfficientIP. The transfer should be completed by October 10, 2022. Most units will not need to take action, and there should be minimal to no effects on IT operations.
