9/13 – UIC websites experiencing issues [Resolved]

This morning, many UIC unit websites experienced an outage lasting approximately one hour. This outage was caused by overwhelming demand on the shared infrastructure, known as Red, underlying these 500+ sites. Unprecedented demand this fall semester, coupled with several high-traffic sites (e.g. library.uic.edu and dentistry.uic.edu) that transitioned to this shared environment over the summer, exceeded the existing capabilities of the platform.

Technology Solutions, the university’s central IT department, worked to restore service as quickly as possible. Most sites were functional again just over an hour after the outage began, and work continued to address remaining errors. At this time, all impacted websites are fully functional.

However, while some configuration updates have been put in place to stabilize the website infrastructure, Technology Solutions continues to work on a permanent solution that will appropriately scale to meet demand. Please look for more updates on this over the coming weeks.

In the meantime, visitors to an impacted unit website may intermittently experience difficulty loading the page. A refresh of the page will usually cause it to load properly, and we have updated the messaging on the error page to provide this guidance.

This morning at approximately 11:10 a.m., the infrastructure that supports most UIC unit websites (those found at xx.uic.edu, such as library.uic.edu and it.uic.edu) went down, making those sites inaccessible. Technology Solutions, the university’s central IT department, worked to restore service as quickly as possible. As of 12:20 p.m., most of these sites are partially functional again, with site visitors continuing to see errors on many sites. We are continuing to work to restore full functionality.

The following sites are functioning normally:

  • uic.edu
  • Personal sites on People.uic.edu
  • Sites hosted on webhost.uic.edu
