12/16 – Service Disruptions reported on campus [Resolved]

Technology Solutions is happy to report that services have returned to normal operations. There will be a follow-up maintenance activity this evening at 7:00pm on the West Campus wireless network infrastructure, which may result in momentary disruption of service.

A brief timeline of today's service disruption is provided below:

  • At approximately 11:40am, one of the fiberoptic pathways that are the backbone of the UIC network infrastructure was inadvertently damaged by a contractor completing work in a West Campus location. This caused a cascade of communication problems between our East and West Campus data centers (which host UIC's IT services), leading to the disruption of many of these services.
  • The damaged pathway was found at approximately 1:30pm, and was repaired at approximately 2:00pm.
  • Once the network pathway was restored, Technology Solutions staff worked to resolve the residual inter-campus data center communication problems to bring services back up. The last of these problems were resolved at 4:40pm, restoring access to services while using the UIC VPN.

We thank the UIC Community for its patience while our staff worked to restore services. If you continue to experience any problems accessing IT services, please report the problem.
