Sharma and colleagues highlighted how AI and cloud adoption are reshaping the research landscape—from accelerating researcher productivity and reducing time-to-discovery, to supporting rapid scaling of prototypes and opening new go-to-market pathways for entrepreneurial faculty. The panel also underscored barriers such as fragmented data governance across states, which complicates compliance for nationwide research initiatives.

The eighth annual AWS Imagine conference for education, state, and local government leaders kicked off in Chicago late July. Taking place in the Windy City for the first time, attendees partook in a day-and-a-half of programming that explored how education and government customers could innovate on behalf of those they serve. Kim Majerus, AWS Vice President of Global Education and US State and Local Government, delivered the keynote address, which focused on how AWS helped reframe, retrain, and reenergize public sector organizations.

Deep Learning, Gen AI and Cloud – these three technologies collectively are already transforming science. What became very clear to me during my panel was, it also has the potential to transform the research administration, compliance and commercialization aspects as well- research lifecycle stages that are often missed when we talk about the opportunity for impact. In uncertain times of change for higher education, these tools can provide much needed productivity gain and hold the potential to enable transformative change as long as we can balance costs, risks, ethics and impact.
