UIC Launches New PDF Accessibility Project
Introduction
The UIC Technology Solutions Digital Accessibility Team is launching a new project: the UIC Equalify PDF Converter. This project will use artificial intelligence (AI) to turn regular PDFs into accessible web pages that are easy to read and navigate. This will make it easier for everyone, especially people with disabilities, to use digital documents.
Upon completion, users will be able to upload a PDF and receive an accessible version that meets many web accessibility standards. The project also lays the foundation for creating permanent, citable, and accessible versions of UIC’s digital documents.
The tool is expected to be rolled out to Accessibility Liaisons in 2026. This project shows UIC's commitment to creating accessible technology that helps everyone. As an open-source tool, it can be used as a free resource to promote digital inclusion.
