UIC Research Cyberinfrastructure Heading link
Himanshu Sharma, ACER Director – Technology Solutions, updated the committee on UIC’s Research Cyber-infrastructure 5-year Strategic Plan. The report was well documented and benchmarked with peer institutions on research versus central IT budget versus different budget sources for comparison in financing. In 2016, ACCC talked with twelve different schools and benchmarked with 30 others to compare storage, compliance, funding, computational needs, etc., taking a more global approach to IT planning for UIC.
Globus/DTN - Research Data Management Platform Heading link
Himanshu Sharma, ACER Director – Technology Solutions announced the new RD platform called Globus –a well known tool for transferring large amounts of data from one place to another (data transfer node DTN) funded under a $500K grant for 7-8 GB speed of transfer to and from campus to other research institutions, national labs, etc. which can produce data quickly from other sites with no “sensitive” data and capable of shifting gigabytes of data between collaborators at different institutions. The platform is encrypted with UIC credentials, can also create a site to keep data, as well as share with other institutions by utilization of emails – new credentials are not required. Cosmos is another health data tool that collected data from 40,000,000 people in EPIC to use for research.
BOX Update Heading link
With Universities looking to make a swift exit from BOX, UIC negotiated a new contract at a higher cost than expected. Currently, there is no plan to migrate, but will be re-visited in the spring.
