Account Security & Authentication
Case File #001: The Stolen Keys—Protect Your UIC Account
Your UIC account is one of the keys to your digital life. It can provide access to email, coursework, university systems, personal information, and other important resources. Cybercriminals know this, which is why stolen passwords and compromised accounts are valuable targets. In this case, your mission is to protect the keys before someone else gets them.
How your Protect Your Password
- Use multi-factor authentication (MFA). MFA adds another layer of protection even if someone discovers your password.
- Use a strong, unique password. Avoid using the same password for your UIC account and personal accounts.
- Never share your password. UIC staff or legitimate service providers should not need you to send your password by email, text, or chat.
- Lock your devices. Use a PIN, password, fingerprint, or facial recognition to protect your phone and computer.
- Keep your software updated. Install operating system, browser, and application updates to help protect against known security vulnerabilities.
- Secure your Wi-Fi. Avoid conducting sensitive activities over unsecured public networks whenever possible.
- Use encryption and device security features. Make sure your computer and phone have their built-in security protections enabled.
- Watch for unusual account activity. Unexpected password-reset messages, MFA prompts, or login notifications can be clues that someone is attempting to access your account.
- Don’t approve an MFA request you didn’t initiate. An unexpected authentication prompt could be a sign that someone has your password and is trying to get past MFA.
Detective Tip
Evidence to look for: unexpected login alerts, password-reset emails you didn’t request, unfamiliar MFA prompts, or messages asking for your password.
If something doesn’t look right, stop and investigate before clicking, responding, or approving anything.
