UIC Digital Accessibility Training

December 2, 2025

10:00 AM - 11:00 AM America/Chicago

Overview

After consulting with a number of faculty, there are a few tips and tricks that keep surfacing as potential game-changers for our users. This workshop is intended to be a sampling of intermediate-level tricks like: how to lock MS Word documents so they are not editable, changing the visual styles of the default headers in MS Word to create a template for styles to always look the way you want while also achieving digital accessibility, and how to make template slides in PowerPoint.

Speakers

Julie Baker | Assistant Director of Digital Learning Assessment | University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) - Applied Technologies for Learning in the Arts & Sciences (ATLAS)

Julie Baker is part of the Teaching and Learning with Technology Team for the Applied Technologies for Learning in the Arts and Sciences (ATLAS) leading faculty outreach and consultations for digital accessibility for courses in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois. Julie's accessibility journey started when she joined U of I's IT Accessibility Liaison group in 2024. Prior to arriving at Illinois, she spent more than a decade teaching undergraduate psychology. When away from the office, she likes traveling, board games, and spoiling her 2-year old yellow lab.

Matt Childress | IT Tech Specialist, Zone 2 Manager | University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) - Applied Technologies for Learning in the Arts & Sciences (ATLAS)

Matt Childress has spent most of his days as an IT professional doing front-line computer support at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign—which can be roughly summed up as trying to do the impossible: make Microsoft Office behave. His dedication to accessibility comes from over two decades of using sign language at home and experiencing how a lack of commitment to accessibility can wreak havoc on the people he cares about—not only a Deaf family member but also a fellow musician and close friend who is vision-impaired. Outside of the office, Matt can usually be found hiking, biking, sailing, or holding down the low end as a rock-and-roll bassist.
